Lamps with animals for emotional lighting design

Posted On 24 October 2023

Fun, imaginative, and functional: lamps with animals solve domestic and contract lighting by bringing a pinch of liveliness to every environment.

A fish swimming placidly up the wall, a deer head with a light bulb nose, and a kitten chasing a luminous sphere that jumps out of the desktop are not lysergic hallucinations or images from Lewis Carroll's Underworld, but lamps with animals for designer lighting. Proposed by Karman in the Zoo Collection, they are ideal elements that break up the monotony in any space, to give liveliness to a classic room or break up the minimalism of an essential and contemporary project.

Animal-shaped lamps belong to a category of zoomorphic furnishing objects that, since the beginning of the last century, have struck a chord with fans of industrial design and beyond. From the Traccia table of 1939 by the surrealist artist Merette Oppenheim, a coffee table with long bird's legs, to the little elephant by Charles and Ray Eames, up to the stylized Puppy dog, designed as a seat for the little ones designed by Eero Aaarnio, there are dozens of examples of animals that have become part of the history of design.

In this article, we will see how it is possible to create emotional designer lighting with the animal lamps from the Karman Zoo collection.

Lamps with animals: lighting interprets nature

Funny and expressive faces, dynamic poses, simplified lines, or realistic copies, lamps with animals have different souls and characters. They are real three-dimensional works, high reliefs to hang, or small free-standing sculptures, collector's items that decorate the house by contributing to the lighting system.

If you opt for designer lighting, it is always a good idea to mix technical pieces for ambient light, suspension or arched lamps to highlight tables and sofas, then adding small particular lights to focus attention and glances towards special corners. This is where animal-shaped designer lamps come into play, surprising everyday companions, perfect for emerging almost magically from walls and countertops.

Karman's designer lighting meets the animal world

Karman has a whole line of lamps with animals, pieces that can be used individually as accents of joy in private apartments or in public places such as bars, restaurants, and hotels, or in coordination to always tell new stories.

The Karman Zoo collection was designed entirely by Matteo Ugolini, art director of the brand, who with these pieces demonstrates his desire to have fun and entertain people. Subverting the patterns of classical design, Ugolini has added the function of "shedding light" to three-dimensional objects that, even when turned off, do not lose their blatantly decorative character.

The Karman Zoo collection of lamps with animals also includes, in addition to some table solutions, a series of indoor wall lamps made of ceramic, available in neutral white but customizable in different shades, including dark colors such as black and gray. They all have halogen or LED sources and look good anywhere in the house, next to the bathroom mirror or above the pocket emptier tray at the entrance, behind the sofa or on the sides of the bed.

Among the animal appliques we find the bulldog Amsterdam and the chimpanzee Ugo Rilla, which stretch electrified cables with light bulbs between their teeth, and the bull Corrado, with light bulbs that soften the powerful horns. There is also deer Marnín, with a round nose like that of a clown that lights up when necessary.

Two interpretations of birds also belong to the collection, the exotic toucan Cubano, whose plumage is replaced by details that recall French artisanal pastry making, and the dazed owl Ti. Vedo, whose big eyes are like headlights in the night in the wall-mounted and free-standing versions. And there's also fish Aprile, whose scales have transformed into a flowery pattern that pays homage to spring.

Discover Maoo, the new collection of designer lamps with animals

The novelty of the Karman Zoo collection is Maoo, the new lamp with animals also designed by Matteo Ugolini.

This time the creative wanted to focus on the dynamic movement of a cat chasing its prey, a ball with a mouse inside. The sly face and quick paw perfectly capture the predatory and playful soul of the cat, in a pose that does not appear aggressive but rather curious.

Designed for indoor environments, Maoo is available as a wall lamp or table lamp. The body of the small feline is made of white or black ceramic, the sphere is made of opaline glass, and the rodent that seems trapped inside is a clever illusion created using a simple sticker.

Lamps with animals for designer lighting that excites

Animal lamps demolish Louis Sullivan's adage that form follows function. In this case, in fact, it is the decoration that prevails over the functional aspect.

The animal-shaped lamps are beautiful even when turned off; when turned on, the shadows change their appearance, making details more vivid and adding a hint of theatricality.

It would be a mistake to consider this type of product suitable only for children's bedrooms or playful environments. Designed for private or contract projects, they are not toys but design objects that awaken the child's soul that each of us, even the most grumpy, should never stop nourishing.
